La Comedia of Errors

By William Shakespeare Bilingual adaptation by Lydia G. Garcia and Bill Rauch Play on! translation by Christina Anderson Directed by Bill Rauch World Premiere Play on!
June 28 – October 26, 2019

Let's go hand in hand, mano a mano

This bilingual adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s zaniest comedies about mistaken identities gives audiences the opportunity to see the world from another perspective. Esta es una comedia sobre gemelos separados al nacer. Whether you speak English, Spanish, or both languages, you will love this hilarious production.

Designed to be performed in a variety of spaces, La Comedia of Errors uses costumes, props and live music with ambient lighting, and an intimate actor/audience relationship—all elements of “traditional” Shakespeare staging. Directed by Artistic Director Bill Rauch in his final season in that role, this is a truly unique and intimate adaptation (with just nine actors) emphasizing the human connections at the heart of Shakespeare’s work. This immersive production will push boundaries, expand horizons and open minds.

This play shares a cast and director with another of our season’s plays, Mother Road, a world premiere by Octavio Solis, playing in the Angus Bowmer Theatre. This company within our larger company celebrates the repertory experience.

La Comedia of Errors will be performed at a variety of show times in a variety of spaces, including OSF’s Thomas Theatre and Hay-Patton Rehearsal Center, and in local communities. More information on community performances.

Length: Approximately 1 hour, 38 minutes.

Vamos de la mano

Shakespeare tiene muchas obras, pero pocas tan divertidas como esta. Se trata de una comedia sobre dos gemelos separados al nacer que nos da la oportunidad de apreciar el mundo desde distintas perspectivas. ¿Do not speak spanish? ¿No hablan inglés? ¡No importa!

Suitability Suggestions

This adaptation is still in development, but like Shakespeare’s original, it should be suitable and entertaining for most audiences. There is some comic bawdiness involving the town courtesan, but fidelity and family win out in the end. Check back closer to opening for specifics on this adaptation.

As a result of the generous donation of $4.5 million from a group of donors, comprising of The Goatie Foundation, Roberta and David Elliott, and Helen and Peter Bing, in 2013 the New Theatre was renamed the Thomas Theatre in recognition of longtime OSF Development Director Peter D. Thomas, who died in March 2010.

The gift answered a challenge issued in 1993 when Jo Lynn Allen of the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, the lead donor for the construction of OSF’s New Theatre, passed on the opportunity to name the theatre, issuing the requirement for other donors to make a significant contribution to secure the naming rights. The combined gift from the above group of donors meets the Allen’s threshold, and gives them the naming rights.

The New Theatre opened in 2002 and it carries on the pioneering spirit of its predecessor, the Black Swan. Here, on this intimate and extremely versatile stage, we present new works and explore familiar plays in ways designed to challenge, excite and illuminate. Depending on the flexible seating configuration (thrust, arena, avenue) in use, the theatre seats from 270-360 audience members.

The Hay-Patton Rehearsal Center – dedicated to beloved OSF leaders Richard Hay and Bill Patton – is a multipurpose, creative space that hosts performances as well as rehearsals. In 2019, the HPRC will be configured for the unique, intimate and minimally-produced La Comedia of Errors. Seating in the round will accommodate 100 patrons. This indoor venue includes accessible seats and restrooms, and is located just blocks from the main OSF campus.
