We Are Family

A janitor. A software mogul. A college grad. An IRS paper-pusher. Although they live thousands of miles apart, these four people share a secret: They’re recovering addicts who’ve found a safe haven in an online chat room. There, with liberal doses of jokes and bullying, they help each other navigate the broken terrain of their lives. But when an Iraq War vet’s tragedy spills over into their cyberhome, everything changes.

In OSF's 2014 production of this fearless, groundbreaking play that won the Pulitzer Prize for Quiara Alegría Hudes (In the Heights, The Happiest Song Plays Last), worlds virtual and real unfold, challenging our notions of family, forgiveness, community, and courage.

Video Length: Approximately 2 hours, 5 minutes.

Watch Water by the Spoonful any time between September 1 and September 25 for just $15.

Suitability Suggestions
This Pulitzer Prize-winning play is about the things that hold us back and the people who help us move forward. It deals with crack addiction and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as the advantages and limits of connecting through the internet. Water by the Spoonful contains strong profanity and vivid descriptions of tragic occurrences from the past, including the violence of the Iraq War. It may be best suited for mature high school students who are prepared to handle the language and themes.
