The 14-piece group performs with traditional mariachi music instrumentation made up of 6 violinists, 3 trumpet players, 1 harp, 1 guitarron, 1 vihuela and 2 guitars. Ten out of the 14 members are phenomenal vocalists. This talented group of young men and women come from a small city with a huge passion for mariachi music and sets the standard for mariachi music groups among high schools across the nation. The group performs under the leadership of Eloy Garza - Mariachi music director for Roma High School.

Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza on Community: Roma, Texas is a quaint city in Starr County near the border that divides Texas from Mexico. The city of 10,000 is almost 100% Hispanic and sets in a region known as the Rio Grande Valley. The region is known to celebrate music, art and culture that brings together both Mexicans and Americans. Among the most popular forms of music are tejano, country, conjunto and mariachi but it is mariachi that has put Roma on the map for producing award-winning mariachi groups and vocalists who are the best in the U.S. This is somewhat of a mystery being that Roma is a small rural community but much of their success can be attributed to the support, commitment and passion they have for a style of music that helps Mexican-American youth connect with their Mexican roots. It is common for these youth to spend 10-15 hours weekly in mariachi music rehearsals. Additional time is spent in private vocal classes or working on designing new trajes (outfits). The mariachi music program at Roma has tremendous community support from the school superintendent, the parents and extended family members and school faculty. It is no wonder why Mariachi Nuevo Santander performs with a style of precision and perfection that is mature and exhilarating yet humble and gracious.
