Geisslers Hofcomoedianten

Geisslers Hofcomedianten

Performing in the 2012 Green Show Wednesday, October 10th.

This is their first season in the OSF Green Show.

A Baroque-flavored, multilingual show of satirical sketches... on stilts.

The theatre company Geisslers Hofcomoedianten was founded in 2002 with the goal of reviving the Baroque theatre tradition made famous in the town of Kuks, Czech Republic. Its first performance was Amor Tyran presented in the end of August 2002 during the first year of the festival Theatrum Kuks. The company chose the new theater Comoedien-Haus in Kuks as its home stage. Geisslers Hofcomoedianten has worked to revive the famous Baroque era with its repertory focused on original Baroque texts, geographically related to Kuks.  However, they stage their works using their own theatre poetics and present them as new premieres. Since 2002 Geisslers Hofcomoedianten has participated in theatre festivals and competitions around the Czech Republic gaining a number of awards. The company also performed successfully at theatre festivals in Austria, Hungary (Special Jury Award at the International Theatre Festival in Kazinbarcica, 2008), Italy (2009) and Poland (2010).

Since 2009, after most of its members graduated from the Theatre Department of the Academy of Arts in Prague, the company has started to professionalize. With the exception of one or two plays staged during the summer in Kuks, Geisslers Hofcomoedianten has begun to regularly stage performances during the theatre season in Prague. The company faithfully attempts to follow its specific orientation toward the Baroque period and apply what they call a "Baroque vision of the World."

Geisslers Hofcomoedianten's dramaturgical program is oriented around three major frames of reference: the "summer season" is rooted in Kuks.  The company draws inspiration from the Baroque-era spa town of Kuks and its founder and benefactor Franz Anton Count of Sporck. These performances premiere in August during the festival Theatrum Kuks. The second frame of reference is realized "on the road" - the company performs modern interpretations of classical Baroque plays (Moliére, Goldoni, Calderón, Holberg, Corneille, Gozzi, etc.) staged with the goal of educating theater audiences around the Czech Republic. The last frame of reference could be described as "Baroque inspiration," in which the company stages non-Baroque plays using "Baroque tools" (research of Baroque themes, mixture of Baroque and non-Baroque texts and elements, use of Baroque staging principals and forms of the Baroque theatre).

The Geisslers Hofcomoedianten performance is sponsored by the Czech Center New York and Eyelevel.
