And when it comes to crafting a rich, thought-provoking and multifaceted work for the stage, Cain doesn't do so bad himself. "Equivocation" works so well on so many levels -- as political thriller, as speculative history, as ethical inquiry, as family drama, as theater about theater -- that it's difficult to adequately encapsulate.
And yet, as directed by Bill Rauch in its world premiere, it's not hard to follow, however twistingly it roots around in the minutia of early 17th-century British history, and however often its stellar ensemble actors (Richard Elmore, Jonathan Haugen, Gregory Linington and John Tufts) switch characters.
