Oregon Shakespeare Festival Membership & Giving

advancing the tradition, investing in the future

When asked to share his greatest dream, OSF founder Angus Bowmer responded that his dreams could not be so easily summed up because they were always open-ended.

In 1966, his open-ended dreams gave us the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Endowment Fund. It was a bold move at a time when the Festival only had one theatre and a seven-week season.

Today the Fund is among the largest in American non-profit theatre. In 2007, its total worth exceeds $35 million and it will return more than $1.2 million to support the 2007 season. The Festival's loyal and committed members are the primary source of gifts that support the Endowment Fund and help ensure the Festival's strong future.

planned giving: the Southampton Society

Those who make planned gifts to the OSF Endowment Fund are recognized as members of the Southampton Society. Named for the Earl of Southampton, William Shakespeare's patron, the Southampton Society honors all who follow in the Earl's tradition of support. Planned gifts include bequests, life estates, trusts and OSF Charitable Gift Annuities.

Members receive recognition in publications and a special invitation to participate in the Southampton Society Event which coincides with Shakespeare's birthday in April. (In 2008, this special event is April 25–27.) It is a weekend full of festive events, including lectures, the best seats in the house, and a banquet hosted by our Artistic and Executive Directors.

bequests or trusts

All planned gifts support the OSF Endowment Fund. A number of patrons remember the Festival through a bequest or a trust to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Endowment Fund, 15 S. Pioneer Street, Ashland, OR 97520.

Bequests can be made in an exact dollar amount, as a percentage of the estate or by gifting the remainder of the estate once all other bequests have been fulfilled.

OSF Charitable Gift Annuities

The OSF Endowment Fund is granted the authority to issue Charitable Gift Annuities. Individuals or couples who have reached age 60 or more can establish an annuity with OSF for as little as $5,000. A Charitable Gift Annuity is just that — a gift — therefore the IRS awards the donor a significant charitable deduction. The Festival rewards the donor with a fixed interest rate higher than what new Certificates of Deposit or Money Market Accounts are earning in today's economic conditions. You will receive this income for life and for the life of a beneficiary if you so choose.

There are three types of annuities which the OSF Endowment Fund underwrites: Single-Life, Two-Life and Deferred Payment.

  • Single-Life: Provides the annuitant with fixed payments which are set at the time the annuity is funded for his or her lifetime. Must be at least 60 years old.
  • Two-Life: Provides two individuals with fixed payments which are set at the time the annuity is funded for the life of both and the survivor. Each beneficiary must be at least 60 years old.
  • Deferred Payment: Provides single-life or two-life fixed payments to begin at a date at least 12 months after the annuity is funded. The rate is set at the time the annuity is funded. Participants must be at least 55 years old at the time the annuity is established.

OSF Charitable Gift Annuities are backed by the OSF Endowment Fund itself but are kept separate from the general endowment funds as prescribed by law. Your Charitable Gift Annuity payments are guaranteed by the entire assets of the OSF Endowment Fund. The OSF Endowment Fund's total assets, inclusive of real property, cash, bonds, and securities, are approximately $33.5 million as of March 31, 2007. The OSF Endowment Fund also maintains a segregated Annuity Account whose reserves meet the requirements of all states regulating Charitable Gift Annuities. The fund is invested in cash, bonds and stocks actively traded on the New York Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange or NASDAQ. We will provide you a copy of our latest audited financial statement upon your request.
