Founded by William Whitson in 1966, the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra (PACO) is an award-winning training orchestra for Bay Area string players of high-school age and younger. The emphasis on chamber music uniquely sets PACO apart from other youth orchestras in the Bay Area and lies at the core of our educational program.

Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra on Community: Since 1971 PACO has been invited annually by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to make a guest appearance on its out door Elizabethan Stage. The annual Tour marks the closing of PACO's season each year with the outdoor concert traditionally scheduled for the last Monday in June. Over the years, PACO has reached a wide range of audiences during this annual tour. Not only has it been a privilege for PACO to be sponsored by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, but also to have the opportunity to perform on this beautiful outdoor stage with its perfect acoustics. In addition, the local actors and citizens consider it a privilege themselves to hear such wonderful artistry from out talented young musicians. The Tour is a mutually rewarding experience for all involved and another of PACO's special treasures. Also a part of this annual tour is the concert in Dunsmuir, California. Since 1991 PACO has been invited to perform in Dunsmuir and has donated the concert proceeds to the City Park and the Botanical Garden. This outdoor dinner/concert is part of the city's Railroad Days Celebration and is a very popular event for Northern California's Siskiyou and Shasta counties. Musicians are provided with home stays with local families and many graduates continue to talk about their special experiences with the families long after their visits. In 2006, PACO began an outreach concert at Rogue Valley Manor Retirement Community in Medford, Oregon and has continued bringing music to those who would have the opportunity to attend concert otherwise. Also, in 2006 PACO musicians played our first green show and had a great time. We wish to continue this tradition bringing chamber music to visitors during their annual tour to Ashland.
