This four-month Fellowship is designed for early career directors interested in large scale classical theatre and Shakespeare in particular. Candidates for this Fellowship must have directed at least three Equity or Equity Guest Contract productions, and show an aptitude or interest in directing classical theatre. The Killian Fellow will have the opportunity to assistant direct on two large-scale productions, and will direct a public reading of a new play or adaptation during the season for which they are chosen. Only one such Fellowship is offered each year. Selection is determined by a national advisory committee. Housing, travel expenses, and a stipend are provided.
Recent alumni of our program include Bill Fennelly (recently named Associate Producing Artistic Director at The Acting Company), Michael Barakiva (director of Bridget Carpenter’s UP for OSF’s 2006 season), Davis McCallum (director of The Belle’s Stratagem for OSF in 2005), David Kennedy (artistic associate at the Dallas Theatre Center), and Wendy C. Goldberg (newly appointed artistic director of the O’Neill Playwrights Conference). In 2008, Gisela Cardenas assisted Bill Rauch on The Further Adventure's of Hedda Gabler, assisted Lisa Peterson on Othello, and directed a public reading of Figaro Gets a Divorce.
If your level of experience qualifies you for the Phil Killian Directing Fellowship, please submit: a resumé (indicating which productions were Equity-level), three letters of recommendation on official letterhead, a brief essay describing how this fellowship will support your career goals and print or electronic samples of your work.
