Ashland, Ore.--The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will present a reading of Rolf Fjelde's translation of Henrick Ibsen's Lady from the Sea at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March, 21 in the Angus Bowmer Theatre. The 2009 Phil Killian Directing Fellow, Shana Cooper, will direct. Tickets are $8.00, $7.00 for members and $6.00 for youths 6-17.
The play is the story of Ellida, who leads a comfortably ordinary life in a small tourist town on a Norwegian fjord with her husband, Dr. Wangel, and the daughters from his first marriage, Bolette and Hilda. Ten years earlier, as a girl growing up on a desolate island where the fjords meet the ocean, Ellida had been briefly engaged to a mysterious sailor who wielded a compelling power over her and later vanished. As memories of this stranger press upon her, Ellida grows increasingly restless and discontented with Wangel and their staid, middle-class way of life. When the stranger returns to reclaim her, Ellida must choose between her secure but land-locked existence and a new life as perilous and alluring as the open sea.
The cast features Jeffrey King as Dr. Wangel, Robin Goodrin Nordli as Ellida Wangel, Christine Albright as Bolette Wangel, Emily Sophia Knapp as Hilda Wangel, Gregory Linington as Arnholm, Christopher Michael Rivera as Lyngstrand, G. Valmont Thomas as Ballested and Derrick Lee Weeden as The Stranger.
