Its Not a Move, it’s a Movement

Raphael Xaiver

As I am nearing the end of my FAIR internship with Community Productions, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you one of the acts I am most excited about this summer; Raphael Xaiver! Often times when looking at the dance style of hip hop and the off shoots of breaking, locking and popping, and krump the first instinct is to gawk at the amazing dance feats. But what I find amazing about all the hip hop artists on the Green Show is how often they go beyond the moves to the movement; how hip hop, rap, and breaking are cultural tools of speak up against injustices. Especially, in terms of dance, the depths and beauty in this style of manipulating the bodies to convey the human spirit is astounding. But again Raphael Xaiver is much more than a breaker, but an actor, spiritualist, and historian on hip hop culture. So yes you’ll see some incredible moves this Friday and Saturday night, but there is so much more (including his blend of modern dance and poetry, say what?)

Of course Rapheal isn’t the only artist representing this week, La Famille Léger will be here Monday and Tuesday singing and drumming the songs of French Canada. As well we have the mad raps of 3Blind Mice in The Unfortunates Band (and yes you’ll see me dancing my tail off… again!) And on Sunday we have Ballet Folkórico Ritmo Alegre dancing the traditional Mexican folk style. So come join the Movement!
