A week-long class for English and theatre teachers. Provides a theatre-based—rather than academic—approach, intended to make the works of Shakespeare exciting and accessible for students. Active participation is required. The class fee of $670 includes tuition, tickets to six plays and one Festival Noon lecture. Class runs July 6-11, 2010. Some scholarships available. A $50.00 non-refundable deposit is required at the time you book the class. Payment in full must be received by the Box Office three weeks before the first day of class. No refunds will be made after the three-week deadline.

Joan Langley has served as Education Director for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival since 1988, producing annual tours of Festival actors to schools throughout the western United States, leading resident workshops in Ashland for playgoers of all ages, and seminars for teachers on teaching Shakespeare. Joan has taught and developed lessons for nearly all of Shakespeare’s plays that engage students physically, emotionally and intellectually in the text. She is currently collaborating on a book for teachers on techniques for exploring Shakespeare’s plays. Joan has led workshops at the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America, National Association for Humanities Education, Northwest Council of Teachers of English, among others. She has served on the Editorial Board for Shakespeare Magazine, the Arts Across Oregon Panel for the Oregon Arts Commission, and on a Grants and Policy Panel at the National Endowment for the Arts.
Kirsten Giroux performed in regional theaters across the country for over twenty years. She appeared in over thirty Shakespearean productions in theaters such as Boston Shakespeare Company, Sacramento Theater Company, Idaho Shakespeare Festival and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Since 1999, Kirsten has devoted her time to teaching, working as a Curriculum Specialist and Teaching Artist for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She has created over thirty workshops for the Festival’s Education department; taught hundreds of events for students of all ages and seminars for teachers on teaching Shakespeare. All of her teaching and curriculum development work is designed to get students up on their feet exploring and learning about the works of William Shakespeare.
